About 1066 With Knobs On
For nearly a thousand years the Bayeux Tapestry has been studied, pored over and catalogued, every stitch accounted for. Or so we thought.
In 2018 Professor George Garnett started counting, and found 93 penises: 88 on horses and five on men. Then Dr. Christopher Monk found a 94th, dangling from a running man in the border. Professor Garnett says it is a scabbard. Dr. Monk is in no doubt. 1066 With Knobs On hands the question to you.
In The People's Count, travel all seventy metres of the tapestry in a high resolution scan you can zoom into right down to the stitches. Click every one you spot, submit your count and get your verdict against Garnett's 93 and Monk's 94. Then The Whole Yarn takes you through the story itself: fourteen chapters and fifty-eight scenes, from King Edward's palace to the arrow at Hastings.
